Einstein Forum

The Einstein Forum is a public think-tank which provides a home for critical thinking outside the constraints of ordinary university discourse. Through lectures, workshops and conferences that are open to everyone, the Einstein Forum serves a double function: to give the general public the opportunity to engage with major thinkers at work, and to encourage those thinkers to overcome traditional academic boundaries. At their best, such exchanges not only make available opportunities traditionally confined to elite audiences, but also lead to a democratization of the intellectual process itself.

Established in 1993, the Einstein Forum is a catalyst for the kind of wide-ranging, cross-disciplinary projects which are often demanded but seldom rewarded. Here new and provocative work can be tried out in an open, informal atmosphere. Some of the ideas presented here has taken further shape in one of the Einstein Forum’s book series. Others have served as the basis for working research groups. Conceived as a laboratory of the mind, the Einstein Forum is prepared to try many approaches to see what will bear fruit.

The Einstein Forum is located at the crossroads of discussion in eastern and western Europe. Visitors enjoy the quiet beauty of a lovely eighteenth century square in Potsdam and the cultural riches of downtown Berlin. Operating expenses are provided by the State of Brandenburg, while individual programs and projects are supported by grants from public institutions and private sponsors.

Das Einstein Forum versteht sich als spartenübergreifendes, internationales Laboratorium des Geistes. Es wurde 1993 als Stiftung des Öffentlichen Rechts des Landes Brandenburg gegründet. Den Geist des Nobelpreisträgers hält das Einstein Forum wach, indem es die besten Denker unserer Zeit dazu einlädt, gemeinsam das zu tun, was der Universalist Einstein noch in einer Person verband: über die Grenzen hinweg mit neuen Ideen zu experimentieren. Experten aus aller Welt greifen hier die aktuellen Positionen aus Politik, Wissenschaft, Kunst und Wirtschaft auf, um sie weiterzuführen. Das Einstein Forum ist damit ein Katalysator für eben jene interdisziplinären und zukunftsweisenden Projekte, die so oft gefordert und doch so selten gefördert werden.

Die zahlreichen öffentlichen Konferenzen, Workshops und Vortragsreihen werden oft in Kooperation mit ausgewählten Institutionen aus dem In- und Ausland durchgeführt. Viele der Ideen, die im Einstein Forum präsentiert oder entwickelt wurden, sind später von meinungsbildenden Medien reproduziert sowie in den Publikationsreihen des Forums veröffentlicht worden.

Im historischen Zentrum Potsdams gelegen, ist das Einstein Forum außerdem auch für die Nutzung und Verwaltung des ehemaligen Sommerhauses von Albert Einstein in Caputh verantwortlich.
