G.M. Tamás passes away aged 74
The philosopher Gáspár Miklós Tamás was a towering figure among political dissidents both in his native Romania as a Transylvanian Hungarian minority; and in Budapest where he lived and taught since the late 70s. He was, arguably, among the most famed Hungarian thinkers of our time. He sought freedom and morality across oppressive regimes: first under communist dictatorships, and later in hybrid authoritarian Hungary. He was a champion of social causes in a state that declared war on the poor and the downtrodden. Dubbed TGM by his beholders, but affectionately called Gazsi by his friends, he was an exceptional thinker but most of all, he was a merciless and brilliant debater, donning a unique literary style in political journalism. He will be dearly missed.
